Africa is a continent so vast and diverse that making a list of top places to visit there would be nearly impossible.

From the wildlife to the lakes and the islands, waterfalls, craters, and pyramids, there is so much to see and explore in the countries of this great continent.

Yet, there are always standouts. Best beaches, best safari lodges, most preserved cities, the lists go on. Marketing company Think! X Innovations has come up with its Tourism Sentiment Index, using data collected from posted online content to determine various locations around the world’s ranking for positive digital word of mouth.

This study analyzes online data from 2022 and looks at what people are saying about various destinations around the world and if the reviews are positive, negative, or neutral, and then a score is given.

The list is not sponsored, nor are there any surveys involved.

The data is solely from organic digital word of mouth and compiled after studying over one billion online conversations about over 20,000 global destinations.

The score is to be seen as a reflection of each destination’s tourism industry as a whole, awarding an overall score and looking at all facets of the travel experience, such as tours, accommodations, attractions, transportation, etc.

So, while it may be hard to rank the various fantastic places to visit in Africa, the Tourism Sentiment Index has come up with an organic list of 5 of the Continents’ most loved spots, according to the positive digital word of mouth, from people that have visited and loved these places.

These Are The Top 5 Trending Destinations In Africa According To A New Report

Marrakesh, Morocco

Located on the northwestern coast of Africa, this beloved city is a desert oasis, and the surrounding dunes offer numerous things to do while you visit.

This location seems to win people over for the number of tours available here, from camel rides to dune buggies or, of course, sleeping in a Bedouin tent while camping under the stars.

While it might be Marrakesh that makes this list of trending places in Africa, there’s no reason to write the rest of the country off for a visit. Morocco wins many over who come to see its charms, and there are many reasons it deserves a spot amongst your 2023 travel plans.

Hermanus, South Africa

Far from the mysterious deserts of Morocco, you can find a South African seaside town that is world famous for whale watching. Yes, there are many places you can watch whales around the globe, but here in Hermanus, you can watch them from the land.

In fact, it’s known to be the best location in the world to stand with your feet firmly on the ground and watch the migratory southern right whales.

Those who visit between June and November have the opportunity to watch these majestic creatures as they travel up from Antarctica to Walker Bay to both breed and calve.

Sea kayaking, wine tasting, and beachgoing are also favorites here in Hermanus, located only about an hour and a half from Cape Town.

Zanzibar, Tanzania

If you are looking for the whitest powder beaches you have ever seen, Zanzibar is likely the place for you. This island paradise is located just off the eastern coast of Tanzania, and although technically part of the same country, it’s considered semi-autonomous and feels worlds away.

Tanzania is itself a highly sought-after destination, and any visit to this unique country really should add some time for a pop-over to Zanzibar. From the majestic and winding streets of Stone Town to the eye-opening Anglican Cathedral and Slave Market Memorial, Zanzibar’s important place in history is evident.

Feeling very much a mix of its Arab and African roots, the island is distinctly unique. Head over to the east coast for the beaches, with the many resorts and hotels lining the shores.

Mauritius

Most likely known for its postcard-worthy beaches and lush landscape, the subtropical island country of Mauritius lies just over 1,000km to the east of Madagascar, surrounded by the Indian Ocean.

Most come to Mauritius for nature, the beaches are world-class, and the water is crystal clear. While it is home to some majestic national parks, the main reason this country scored high on the Tourism Sentiment Index for its beaches.

Another reason to love Mauritius? It’s becoming more and more popular with digital nomads, who flock here looking for amazing beaches without the overcrowding of the Caribbean.

Seychelles

For the next entry on our list of trending African destinations, we are going about 1,700 km north of Mauritius to another island paradise off the coast of East Africa, here, we find Seychelles.

This island archipelago actually takes the top spot for the Tourism Sentiment Index’s most loved spot in Africa, with its main draw being the beaches.

Comprised of 115 islands, Seychelles is a major bucket list destination for many. The county’s remote, deserted island vibe, crystal blue water, stunning beaches, and abundance of marine life all draw visitors to this destination.

For those who are considering a trip to Seychelles, the good news is that you can stay as long as you want, so long as you meet some basic requirements.
