The rise of people flocking to foreign countries to work remotely has begun. More and more of us want the freedom to explore the world from a new place and to meet fellow nomads along the way.

But with so many travelers working from their laptops now and nomad visas popping up left, right, and center,  how do you choose where to spend your time?

If you’re looking for somewhere to hunker down and get to work, these locations are the top hotspots for nomads this summer to live and travel.

Spain

Although a popular country for nomads and tourists to visit, Spain is still relatively affordable to live in. Even if you compare the prices of hostels, they’re significantly cheaper than other destinations in Europe.

During the warm summer months, Spain is home to numerous festivals, drawing in hundreds of visitors. With its lively culture, cheap tapas, and diverse scenery, this country is a hot spot for digital nomads.

Spain even launched a visa for non-EU citizens, making it easier for digital nomads to experience all that the country has to offer. Just think, you could be basking in the sun in a park right now!

Thailand

It’s no secret that nomads and travelers have been known to venture to Asia for the vibrant food scene, cheap prices, and low cost of living. Thailand is a diversified country with a lot to offer.

Thailand has been a hub for digital nomads for years, with Chiang Mai taking the lead as one of the top nomad hotspots in the world. With the long-term residency visa and smart visa, travelers can apply to stay in the country for 4 to 10 years.

With street food, historic sites, buzzing markets, and cheap cafes, Thailand is a solid place to begin if you’re looking to budget while you work.

USA

While we’re all eager to experience something new, most of you will be surprised to know that the U.S. is on the list of top spots for nomads this summer (and will save you the hassle of visas).

Not typically thought of as a “tropical beach destination,” the United States coastline is equally as tempting and diverse. Many people say that each state is like a different country anyway, so why not venture around a little and see what the U.S. has to offer?

If you’re looking for relaxation and beach views, California, Hawaii, or even the East Coast are good options. For city vibes and energetic evenings, look into NYC, Boston, or even Austin.

Mexico

If you go online for a few minutes, it seems as though everyone is in Mexico right now. In recent months, nomads have been flocking to this vibrant country to experience its culture and friendly locals.

Close to the U.S., Mexico is an ideal spot if you want great weather with low prices. The temporary resident visa allows nomads to apply to live in the country for 6 months up to 4 years, as long as travelers can meet requirements.

Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido have become nomadic havens, with their abundance of co-living spaces, beautiful landscapes, and close-knit nomad communities. Puerto Escondido is a quaint beach town along the coast, while Oaxaca is a colorful city buzzing with energy.

Portugal

Portugal really has it all. Soft sands, vineyards, surfing communities, and a decent cost of living (if you know where to go). With its close proximity to the US and a central hub in Europe, living in Portugal makes it easy to travel around while living abroad.

Lisbon is a popular destination for digital nomads looking to experience a more subdued version of city life. While Lisbon does come alive at night, it’s certainly not as wild as other cities in Europe. From here, it’s also very easy to rent a car or take public transportation to venture around the country.

If you want to be fully immersed in nature, Madeira is another top contender for digital nomads. An archipelago of 4 islands, Madeira is for those looking for slow living. Known for its rugged cliffs, blue seas, and beaches, it’s a good choice if you’re looking for a calmer pace.
