Spain is a beautiful country in the summer. The great thing about this country in the summer is that each area differs.

Catalonia has places like Barcelona and Costa Brava, known for having some of the best seafood in the world, and other sites like Marbella on Spain’s southern coast that have the best laid-back luxury spots.

Like other European countries, Spain closes down for a holiday in August, so the locals travel around the country looking for a beach town to cool off in. This history of closing down the entire country for a month is murky, but it could be attributed to the intense heat in July and August.

Traveling to different countries usually shows you the most remarkable spots are the ones the locals go to, and this list will give you the best coastal towns you should visit, even if you’re traveling in August. 

Spain is the perfect place to spend your summer vacation. Spain’s coastal regions differ in beaches, flora, fauna, and culture. You have places like Andalucia, where flamenco and tapas were born. You have places like The Canary islands, where British and German tourists have been flocking to for ages because they know it’s an outdoor lover’s paradise.

Marbella 

Located in Andalucia, Marbella is one of Spain’s most picturesque beach towns. You have soft sandy Mediterranean beaches on one side, and on the other, you have the Sierra Blanca Mountains. This gives the beach town a remarkable contrast that can’t be found elsewhere. There are tons of things to do here.

The Golden Mile is the fancy part of the town and has some of the best bars, restaurants, housing, and other amenities directly facing the beach and ocean. If you plan on partying this summer and want to avoid being in places like Mykonos, check out Marbella. It has the perfect mix of nightlife and laid-back luxury.

Sitges

Sitges is a beautiful white-washed beach town on Cataloina’s southwest coast. One aspect of this beach town is that it’s a massive LGBTQ+ destination. LGBTQ+ travelers have been visiting Sitges for decades, and more specifically, the bear community laid claim to many of its bars and nightclubs.

On top of having a good ‘European’ beach, it also has some fascinating museums like the Maricel Museum, which stores some of Catalonia’s most exciting pieces.

Nerja

If you’re a summer beach town concert fan, you must check out Nerja. It is located near Málaga on Spain’s southern coast and has one of Spain’s most incredible concert venues. Cueva de Nerja is a performance space located north of Playa la Caleta, and acts perform inside the cave on a platform where the chamber amplifies them.

Check out this one if you’re looking for a more relaxed beach town (compared to Málaga). 

Costa Brava 

Another favorite, especially among Catalan travelers, is Costa Brava. It takes a little longer for this area to warm up since it’s more northern, but once it does, locals and travelers flock to its beaches since they are considered one of the best in Catalonia.

That might even include some parts of nearby France. This is the type of place you’ll have a beach surrounded by giant rocks and a beautiful town in the back. It’s all extremely picturesque. 

Puerto de la Cruz

Tenerife is an outdoor lover’s paradise, and more North Americans realize that. Places like Puerto de La Cruz offer travelers a mix of outdoorsy adventure and comfortability, perfect for large groups or families. A black sand beach surrounds the town with two large artificial pools on one side.

This gives travelers options. It also has excellent food options like Meson El Monasterio, which serves Spanish Mediterranean food.
