Summer is almost here and tourists are gearing up for an epic season of travel.

Cities all over the world have reported record-breaking tourist arrivals all year, and this summer is expected to be one of the biggest yet.

In fact, a recent survey from TripAdvisor indicated that 82% of Americans plan on taking a vacation this summer.

But where is everyone headed?

TripAdvisor’s survey looked at search trends for Americans who plan to travel between May 29 – August 31 of this year, and came up with some interesting information such as top domestic and international destinations, the most popular dates to travel, and the frequency people plan to travel.

It studied the habits of travelers from Australia, Japan, Singapore, the U.K., and the U.S.

Top International Destinations

According to TripAdvisor, Americans are sticking to old favorites this summer. Some of these destinations are popular because of their relaxing vibes and luxury hotel offerings, while others are rich in cultural and historical charm.

6. Rome, Italy

The 6th most popular international destination for American travelers this summer is the Italian capital of Rome.

With a broad array of things to do, Rome is one of those places that suit all different types of travelers. Foodies, shopaholics, history buffs, and adventure seekers will all find plenty to do in this culturally rich city.

5. Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Beautiful Cabo San Lucas on Mexico’s Pacific coast was the third most visited Mexican destination this year.

Cabo San Lucas is the perfect spot for a relaxing getaway, especially for Americans on the West Coast, as flights are quick, plentiful, and affordable.

The city has established itself as a laid-back, wellness-driven destination that is perfect for young travelers, families, and nature lovers.

4. London, U.K.

A long-time favorite of American travelers, London is always at or near the top of “best-of” lists. The city oozes history and cultural charm but is also a modern destination with world-class entertainment and food.

Visitors could spend a lifetime exploring all London has to offer, and while it is not necessarily known as an affordable destination, there are 95 free museums and 487 free sightseeing attractions scattered around the city.

3. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic’s golden child, Punta Cana, is another city that has had off-the-chart tourism numbers this year.

With tranquil blue waters and endless sandy beaches, a fantastic selection of beachfront hotels, and warm tropical weather, Punta Cana is a top spot to relax and recharge in the Caribbean.

2. Paris, France

Paris is one of the most visited cities in the world, and for good reason. The city is rich in music, food, history, and architecture and tastefully blends its traditional and modern values.

Well over 2 million visitors traveled to Paris in 2019, and the city is set to welcome even more over the coming years as it gears up for the 2024 Summer Olympics, which will take place throughout the city.

1. Cancun, Mexico

In recent years tourism in Cancun has become stronger than ever.

As the city has grown, it has built itself to be one of the most convenient destinations for tourists, with an easily accessed international airport, tons of amazing resorts and hotels to choose from, and a welcoming culture.

Despite recent challenges, including increased violence and unwanted seaweed invasions, Cancun continues to dominate as a top tourist destination for Americans.

What Are Travelers Up To This Summer?

In addition to the top destinations, the survey also provided some interesting insights into other travel trends this summer. For instance, did you know that:

  • 55% of Americans plan to travel more in 2023 than they did last year
  • The majority (62%) of Americans plan to take 1-2 trips this year, while 31% plan on taking 3-5 trips. Only 7% of those surveyed intend to take 6 or more trips.
  • Americans ranked second for domestic travel with 70% planning on only traveling domestically. Meanwhile, 80% of Japanese intend on only exploring their own nation, and only 4% of people in Singapore will take only a domestic vacation.
  • This summer, 37% of British travelers will travel both domestically and internationally, while only 15% of Japanese plan to do so. 25% of Americans plan to explore both at home and abroad.
  • 60% of Americans plan on spending more on travel this summer than they did last year.
  • Cost is universally the most important factor travelers consider when planning a vacation.
  • The most popular week of travel for Americans this summer is June 12 – July 18.

In addition to exposing the top international destinations, the survey also uncovered the most popular domestic locations for American travelers this summer. They are:

  1. Orland, Florida
  2. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
  3. Las Vegas, Nevada
  4. Honolulu, Hawaii
  5. New York City, New York
  6. Key West, Florida
  7. Ocean City, Maryland
  8. Lahaina, Hawaii
  9. Chicago, Illinois
  10. Nashville, Tennessee
