Plan For Romania’s New Digital Nomad Visa

In an attempt to boost the economy and attract a different type of tourist to the country, the Senate agreed on a visa program which will potentially bring longer term visitors to Romania. Romania’s Chamber of Deputies member Diana Buzoianu, who initiated a draft of the new law, explained the motivation behind the digital nomad visa.

“This legal initiative was developed following months of work in collaboration with the Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digitalization, as well as experts working with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I initiated the project as I trusted it to be a law through which financial resources can be drawn to Romania, as many other member states have already done.”

What is a Digital Nomad Visa?

Digital nomad visas are typically for people who mainly work on their computer. They can either be independent contractors (also known as freelancers) who don’t have to go to one location for work or people whose job has transitioned to remote-only and are legally allowed to conduct their work tasks outside of their home country.

A digital nomad visa also provides individuals who can work remotely an opportunity for a long-term stay in one destination outside of their country of residence.

Some attractive aspects for a digital nomad-friendly country include a relatively lower cost of rent, fast WiFi and opportunities for outdoor adventures in the countryside on weekends – all things that a destination like Romania offers.

The terms in which a traveler can obtain a digital nomad visa differ from country to country. In some cases, applicants must show proof of a certain amount of annual income. An example of this is in Barbados, where the mininum income of $50,000 USD is expected.

If you consider yourself a digital nomad and wish to apply for a visa to set up camp somewhere longer term, check to see if the digital nomad visa can be extended or not. An example would be Dubai’s Remote Work Visa, which cannot be extended.

EU Countries With a Digital Nomad Visa Program

Currently, countries that are part of the EU bloc which offer opportunities for a digital nomad type of visa are Germany, Spain, Czech Republic, Estonia and Iceland. There is also a digital nomad visa for the Republic of Greece in the making.

Most recently, the nation of Malta opened registration for a year-long digital nomad visa. The visa applies to those who work for companies operating outside of Malta and can show proof of vaccination.

Although it’s not part of the EU, the Republic of Georgia offers a great opportunity for remote workers looking to relocate somewhere a travel longer-term. Canadians and Americans can get a one-year residence and the income requirement is $2,000 USD a month. This is a good alternative to a tourist visa stamp, which currently isn’t permitted due to the ongoing pandemic.
