Travelers have been historically attracted to this place —especially for vacations— for its beautiful beaches, fantastic weather, rich culture, and the great variety of activities for all kinds of travel: from unforgettable family vacations to the most romantic honeymoons. Travelers’ interest in this destination has increased along with worldwide travel demand this year. Hawaii has been facing overtourism, and as a consequence, hotels in the state have been raising fares and local authorities have been trying to regulate visitors’ entry and attractions visits —now tourists need to make an online reservation to visit the iconic Diamond Head State Monument.
According to a recent study prepared for Hawaii Tourism Authority, in 2022 statewide room prices have gone up by 33% compared to 2019 and 2021. Hawai‘i Hotel Performance Report for April 2022—which considered properties with 20 rooms or more— showed that the average daily room rate in the archipelago is $371.
Compared with other popular destinations in the United States, Hawaii takes the lead on the highest prices, followed by Miami and Phoenix. And prices go even higher depending on the island, the area, and the luxuries.
The Most Expensive Destinations In Hawaii
Depending on the experience travelers want—luxurious or modest accommodations— and the preferred island, prices can vary considerably. Here’s a quick guide that provides references to current prices according to the most recent studies.
Properties that offer luxury and the best commodities for travelers have been charging about 50% more compared to 2019. Travelers looking for luxurious experiences can expect average daily prices of $887. Staying at any fancy hotel in Hawaii for a week will cost over $6000.
Those looking for a more modest experience and wanting to save on luxury can opt for midscale and economy-class hotels. Prices are still 17% higher than they were in 2019, but visitors can book rooms for $210 a night statewide.
Hotels in Maui, the second-largest island in Hawaii state, have the highest average fares. This island’s popularity has made local authorities from the Maui City Council vote for a bill to place a cap on the number of travelers allowed on the island. Maui’s overtourism has risen hotel prices and now the average daily rate is $632 and luxury resorts can cost up to $1,000 per night according to the information shared by Beat of Hawaii. Compared to 2019 prices have gone up by almost 50%.
In another part of the archipelago, Kauai —known as “the Garden Isle” for its beautiful tropical rainforest— travelers can also expect high prices. Recent data shows that prices on this island have increased by 64%. Visitors will find rooms with an average price of $475 per night.
On Big Island, the largest island in the archipelago and the United States, those who want to experience the colored sand beaches and stay near volcanoes and falls, will have to pay hotel rates 53% higher compared to 2019. The average daily rate on Big Island is $420. And those who want to stay at the north of the island, in Kohala Coast, to enjoy the breathtaking valleys will have to pay 72% more since rates in this area are currently at $662 per night.
Hawaii is becoming a more exclusive destination and fewer travelers will be able to afford vacations on this fascinating island. The most expensive destinations in Hawaii are Maui and Kohala Coast, tourists who want to stay at these locations will have to pay over $600 per night at a hotel.
Those who want to save money at Hawaiian hotels can stay at Oahu, Honolulu, where prices are lower. And travelers who want to experience Maui can consider the west side where prices haven’t increased as much as in other areas of the island.
