Are you considering visiting Cancun this summer? If so—you’ll need to hurry up and get your hotel booked.

Cancun hotels are already at 90% occupancy for the summer months.

Post COVID-19 recovery rates for Cancun hotels continue to surprise locals, with many hotels reaching 90% occupancy levels until late July; this means Cancun could be more popular than in 2019. However, the President of the local hotels’ association indicates that there is still room to grow in the rest of the state.

So, if you’re yet to book your vacation to Cancun, you may wonder: are there any other options in Mexico

Absolutely.

Although the main Cancun hotels are almost fully booked, other tourist destinations in Quintana Roo still have hotels below 15% occupancy levels. We will discuss these destinations in this article.

Why Is Cancun So Popular For Tourists This Summer?

The president of the Hotels’ Association of Cancun, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres—Jesus Almageur—made the claim about Cancun hotels being almost fully booked this summer. In his most recent statement, he said the return of European tourists, after two years of low numbers, will boost occupancy numbers throughout the summer.

Jesus Almageur said: “The novelty is that we are getting back many of the connections that we’d lost in the European market. This will benefit the number of tourists that will arrive from July through September. That’s why the numbers are looking up.”

He also believes wedding tourism, which saw a significant decrease during COVID-19, will account for a significant percentage of the numbers.

He added: “Some hotels are already fully booked for the first week of July. The demand that they are seeing is primarily coming from tourism groups, weddings, and general travelers. With that, we expect to be able to reach similar numbers to the ones that we saw over the Easter break. This is a very good sign”

Although European tourists will return to Cancun this summer, American and local tourists will also account for large numbers of the tourists.

Why Mexico Is The Perfect Destination For Americans In 2022

Although large swathes of the world have dropped COVID-19 entry requirements—including Jamaica, Costa Rica, and Belize—Mexico was one of the first nations to end all COVID-19 entry requirements. It was also one of the few nations to remain open throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a result, travelers don’t need to:

  • Quarantine
  • Test on arrival
  • Test before departure
  • Show proof of vaccination
  • Fill in passenger locator forms

There are some internal COVID-19 restrictions in Mexico, including mandatory face coverings indoors and social distancing, depending on the state.

However, things are largely back to normal nationwide.

But What If You Want To Avoid Busy Cancun?

If you don’t fancy struggling to find hotel spaces in Cancun, there are many other options in Mexico. Other popular destinations include:

  • Tulum
  • Playa Del Carmen
  • Isla Mujeres
  • Cozumel
  • Cabo San Lucas

Cabo San Lucas is an incredibly popular destination for American visitors. Situated on the Pacific side of Mexico and only a short flight from Western U.S. states, Cabo San Lucas is one of Mexico’s safest destinations with the lowest homicide rates.

Baja California Sur, which is home to Cabo San Lucas, has the least amount of intentional homicides in the nation for the first two months of 2022.

Travelers can find dreamy beaches and luxurious hotels throughout the region. What’s more, the region is less ‘touristy’ than Cancun—which is one of the world’s most popular destinations.

Isla Mujeres, Tulum, or Playa Del Carmen are also great options if tourists want to still fly to Cancun airport, as it’s one of the best-connected airports in the Western Hemisphere.

While Cancun might be sold out, these nearby cities will likely have more availability, as a little more effort is needed to get to them. Visitors will have to take a ferry to reach Isla Mujeres or up to a 2.5-hour drive to get to Tulum, but the journey to these paradise locations is worth it.

In Summary

Cancun is still an excellent destination for Americans this summer; however, Americans need to ensure they book their hotels soon to avoid disappointment.

If travelers are still struggling to find a suitable hotel, they should try other Mexican destinations.
