Located just across the Mexico-United States border from San Diego, CA, Tijuana is a popular vacation spot in Mexico. Its close proximity to the U.S., as well as a variety of fun attractions and beautiful scenery, have ensured this. From beaches to taco trucks, here are 10 things to do on your next trip to this city.
1. Explore Avenida Revolucion
This colorful, artsy street is a great place to visit to get a great picture of Tijuana! Home to several shops, coffee places, restaurants, and hotels, you won’t be bored here! If you’re looking for homemade artisan crafts, this is also a great street to check out – it’s home to several street vendors and smaller shops as well.
2. Visit Local Markets
Tijuana is home to many local markets, including Mercado El Popo and Mercado Hidalgo. A visit to a local market is an excellent option for those looking to experience the unique flavor of the city – both literally and metaphorically! The city’s markets are a great spot to find souvenirs, pick up locally grown foods, and try some delicious cuisine.
3. Visit Catedral de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe
Visiting a cathedral is generally a foolproof way to see some stunning and historical architecture, and this cathedral is no exception! Built in a colonial and neo-classical style, this building is well worth a stop by and a picture or two.
4. Check out the beach!
Here’s one great for both relaxation and excitement! Tijuana’s beach is an excellent location for watching the sunset or enjoying some drinks with a group of friends. A little less touristy, Tijuana Beach is also a great spot to get away from the city a little more. The Coronado Islands on the U.S. side are also often visible from this beach!
5. Grab A Street Taco
Tijuana is known for its variety of delicious street food – especially tacos! This is a great way to experience some authentic local cuisine, support the community directly, and experience some excellent food all in one go. A couple of popular spots are Taconazo and Brasa Taqueria.
6. Experience The Nightlife Scene
Tijuana has a reputation as a party city for a reason – it has a great nightlife scene! To experience it for yourself, head downtown. Avenida Revolucion – also mentioned above – as well as Plaza del Zapato, are both areas home to a variety of excellent nightclubs and bars.
7. Take a Guided Tour
This is a great option for those traveling to Tijuana, as well as Mexico for the first time! Several tours – generally starting in San Diego – with a variety of focuses are available, and are a great way to avoid some of the potential trip planning hassles. You can go on a pub crawl, tour the area’s best tacos, or go sightseeing – all with the added convenience of a knowledgeable guide and preplanned itinerary.
8. Stop By The Tijuana Cultural Center
Tijuana may have a vibrant party scene, but it also has an equally vibrant culture and history. You can learn all about those aspects at the Tijuana Cultural Center. This unique, spherical-shaped location features exhibits, a theatre, and some outdoor gardens.
9. Visit La Mona de Tijuana
Here’s another option great for sightseeing and photos! This 5-story tall statue was built in 1989 by local artist Armando Garcia. Originally built in his backyard, it is now located near the airport. An additional piece of fun trivia about this giant statue is that its creator – along with his wife – once lived inside it!
10. Enjoy A Ceasar Salad
Did you know that Cesar Salads originated in Tijuana? That’s right – the birthplace of the now world-famous salad was in the city’s own Cesar’s restaurant, over 100 years ago. Caesar’s is still open to this day, and serving up some equally iconic and delicious meals.
