Anyone who travels in America can attest that not only is there a lot to see, but there are a lot of “only in America” attractions as well.

While many famous sites and attractions, such as Route 66 or Area 51, are considered unique and one-of-a-kind, there are endless other offbeat places to visit that many travelers do not know about.

Fantasy Canyon in Utah

With summer travel in full swing, it might be time to think about where to visit in the fall. If unique attractions catch your eye, here is a very comprehensive list with a great offbeat destination in each state, perfect for a fall road trip

These unique attractions were determined by looking at Atlas Obscura’s “want to visit” and “been here” votes. The list includes each state’s highest rankings ratio, meaning a lot of people want to visit, but not many have actually visited yet.

Using the number of “wants to visit” minus the number of actual visits, a rarity ratio is calculated for each attraction.

With a list ranging from natural wonders, oddities, the macabre, and a variety of other things, there definitely is something from all aspects of the unique.

The list spans the country, including things such as ghost trains, ruins, treehouses, pits, and libraries, meaning there really is something for everyone on the list.

Here Are 7 Of the Most Unique Attractions To Visit Across The U.S. This Fall:

Florida: Neptune Memorial Reef

Rarity Ratio: 10.2

Located off Key Biscayne, this is a unique destination for the fact that it’s actually an underwater graveyard.

Hailed as the “Ultimate Green Burial Opportunity”, Neptune takes cremated remains and fashions them into memorials and structures that make up an artificial reef.

Although this is technically a final resting place, visiting divers are encouraged, and it’s now the most popular dive site in Miami.

Georgia: Fantastic Pit

Rarity Ratio: 12.5

To reach Georgia’s Fantastic Pit, first, you must venture into Ellison’s Cave. The high rarity score of this location might have a lot to do with accessibility, as it’s strictly only for advanced cave explorers.

Why is it so amazing? Well, the Fantastic Pit is nearly 600 feet deep, which is more or less the length of the Seattle Space Needle down into the Earth.

Idaho: Big Idaho Potato Hotel

Rarity Ratio: 7.0

Let’s be honest, who doesn’t love the thought of staying in a huge potato overnight?

Although only 10 years old, this attraction pays homage to the many oversize attractions that popped up on American roadsides back in the 1940s-1960s.

Although this one is not just “off the road” but smack in the middle of a Boise area 400-acre farm.

Oh and yes, if you were wondering, of course, you can rent it on Airbnb

@loveatfirstflight_ Theres a ton of ways to enjoy a potato, but we never imagined one of those ways would be staying inside of one 🤣 this is the Big Potato Hotel located in Boise Idaho. Its super stylish with all the amenities you need to have a cozy stay AND it comes with a pet cow named Dolley! Kentucky: Broke Leg Falls

Rarity Ratio: 8.7

This unique natural beauty can be found in Daniel Boone National Forest, with a series of several waterfalls and scenic canyons to view. You can find Broke Leg not too far from the Appalachian town of Frenchburg.

What makes this area so unique is that it was only discovered after a massive tornado ripped through the forest in 2012. It has still kept its tornado-shredded appeal, and the officials have decided to leave it this way and not restore it in order to pressure the originality.

Also, Kentucky is trending right now, so if you are one of the many checking out Louisville, this would make a great add-on to that trip.

Nebraska: Toadstool Geologic Park

Rarity Ratio: 4.6

One reason to visit this unique place is to see the Nebraskan version of the badlands, and this breathtaking park is worth the drive.

Located far into northwestern Nebraska, Toadstool Geologic Park has been described as being somewhat otherworldly.

With formations that date as far back as 30 million years ago, this landscape captivates visitors who make the trip here.

Utah: Fantasy Canyon

Rarity Ratio: 9.3

Utah’s Fantasy Canyon might look large and spread out in the pictures, but it is actually a somewhat small roadside attraction.

This site is made of interesting and impressive strange shapes made out of rocks that have been weathered and eroded over the years.

There is a short .6-mile loop trail that allows visitors to get up close and personal with the strange shapes, making it the perfect stop-off point on a road trip if you are not into a big hike.

Washington D.C.: Riggs Library

Rarity Ratio: 8.0

Located at the prestigious Georgetown University, Riggs Library is simply stunning.

Looking like something from a fantasy or futuristic film, it contains books upon books set amongst spiral staircases and cast iron walkways.

One thing to note: to get into this space, you must now have an invitation, so don’t just show up and hope to explore!
