Which hotel chains are most favored by travelers? A new ranking reveals the best hotel chains in the United States.
J.D. Power, a leading consumer intelligence and data analytics company, just released a study ranking the best hotel chains for 2023.
The study is based on responses from more than 33,000 travelers and takes into account six key ranking factors:
- Communications and connectivity
- Food and beverage
- Guest room
- Hotel Facility
- Staff service
- Value for price
Here’s how major hotel chains across the U.S. stacked up in the results of this study:
Luxury: Waldorf Astoria
Waldorf Astoria takes the top spot for luxury hotels in the United States. Part of the Hilton brand, these hotels are known for their five-star services and amenities.
There are just 15 Waldorf Astoria locations across the United States in upscale destinations like New York, Beverly Hills, and Park City.

Upper Upscale: Hard Rock Hotels/Margaritaville Hotels & Resorts
For more attainable luxury, travelers may consider staying at an “upper upscale” hotel which still offers high-end amenities, luxurious facilities, and top-notch service.
It’s a tie for this category, with both Hard Rock Hotels and Margaritaville Hotels & Resorts earning the same number of points in the ranking.
Both of these hotel chains offer fun, high-energy, themed hotel experiences. Hard Rock Hotels has locations in places like Orlando, Las Vegas, and Atlantic City. Margaritaville Hotels & Resorts can be found in beach destinations like South Padre Island, Panama City Beach, and Key West.
Upscale: Cambria Hotels & Suites
Next up on the rankings is Cambria Hotels & Suites, which scored the top place for the upscale hotels category. Part of Choice Hotels, this chain offers luxury accommodations across the United States.
There are dozens of Cambria locations across the country. Some of the newest hotels have opened in Orlando, Washington, D.C., Austin, and Savannah.
Upper Midscale: Trademark Collection By Wyndham
When it comes to upper midscale hotels, Trademark Collection by Wyndham takes first place. “Upper midscale” hotels refer to hotels that are on the higher end of mid-range with more luxury touches.
Trademark Collection by Wyndham offers unique accommodations in popular destinations across the United States. Many of these are former historic hotels that have been renovated and modernized to be part of the Wyndham Hotels brand.
For example, the historic Art Deco Beekman Tower in New York was ranked as one of the best Wyndham hotels in the world by The Points Guy.
Midscale: Tru By Hilton
The midscale hotel category winner is Tru by Hilton. This brand is focused on affordable hotels that are vibrant and “young at heart.” With more than 250 locations across the United States, there are plenty of options for budget-conscious travelers.
Many Tru by Hilton properties include amenities like swimming pools, fitness centers, and free breakfast, making them a good choice for travelers who want to get the most for their money.
Economy: Americas Best Value Inn/Microtel By Wyndham
Finally, in the economy hotel category, budget travelers will have a good experience at both Americas Best Value Inn and Microtel by Wyndham.
These two chains tied in the rankings for economy hotels. Although you won’t find anything fancy at these hotels, you will find excellent value, clean and comfortable guest rooms, and modest amenities.
Extended Stay Hotels
In addition to the hotel categories above, the survey also included a ranking of extended-stay hotel chains:
- Upscale Extended Stay: Hyatt House
- Upper Midscale/Midscale Extended Stay: Home2 Suites by Hilton
- Economy Extended Stay: WoodSpring Suites
